ABOUT THE ROLE
The Sierra Avalanche Center (SAC) is seeking an experienced and motivated Development Manager to plan and execute our annual fundraising and events strategy. This is a part-time position reporting to the Executive Director, focused on securing the financial resources needed to support SAC’s mission.
The Development Manager collaborates with the Executive Director, the Development Committee, and the Education Manager to develop and execute annual fundraising plans, track progress toward targets, and manage revenue streams. This includes individual donations, grants, events, lift ticket sales, and corporate sponsorships.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Fundraising and Donor Management
- Plan and execute fundraising efforts in alignment with SAC’s strategic goals and annual budget.
- Identify new and creative revenue opportunities for the organization.
- Plan and execute individual donor campaigns, including developing messaging, selecting mediums, and establishing timing; manage donor tracking and recognition.
- Maintain and monitor donor data integrity across platforms, including Salesforce, Donorbox, Stripe, Square, PayPal, Quickbooks, and Mailchimp.
- Assist the ED with grant applications and manage grant deliverables and reporting.
- Help the ED develop and implement the corporate sponsorship program, conducting outreach to potential local businesses and tracking/reporting on sponsorship deliverables.
- Assist the ED in forming and maintaining relationships with high-value donors.
- Manage the promotion and sale of donated lift tickets from ski resort partners.
2. Event Planning and Execution
- Plan, implement, and promote SAC fundraising events, coordinating with the Education Manager as necessary.
- Ensure all fundraising events are properly planned, staffed, executed, tracked, and are aligned with the annual budget and strategic plan.
- Manage and update the "events" sections of the Sierra Avalanche Center website.
3. Administrative Support
- Coordinate the purchase or donation of branded merchandise, gear, collateral materials, clothing, and equipment, ensuring compliance with sponsorship agreements.
- Assist the ED in developing the annual budget and tracking monthly income versus budget.
- Perform other duties as directed by the Executive Director and Board of Directors.
QUALIFICATIONS
While not strictly required, candidates with the following skills and certifications will be given priority:
- Demonstrated success in nonprofit fundraising.
- Experience in event management.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required.
- Strong preference for demonstrated success in corporate, foundation, or individual fundraising.
- Passion for avalanche forecasting, education, and backcountry winter recreation.
- Knowledge of the winter tourism industry, especially backcountry users, ski resorts, and outdoor retailers.
- Administrative/Personal Skills:
- Advanced proficiency with Google G-Suite (Docs, Sheets, etc.).
- Proficiency with database, payment, or CRM platforms (e.g. Salesforce, Donorbox, Stripe, Square, PayPal, Quickbooks, Mailchimp.)
- Ability to learn and implement new platforms and software.
- Experience developing and managing budgets.
- Exceptional organizational skills; strong attention to detail and deadlines.
- Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to take initiative and work both independently and collaboratively.
- Ability to speak effectively in front of small and large groups.
- Ability to prepare and present reports.
- Experience managing content on websites and social media.
- Other Skills/Experience:
- Ability to work legally in the U.S. required.
- Work may be performed in multiple locations, indoors and out, potentially including mountain winter environments.
- Some travel required for events in the greater Lake Tahoe region.
- May occasionally be required to lift and/or move up to 35 pounds.
SCHEDULE & COMPENSATION
- Annual Hours: 500–700 hours annually. Approximately 60–80 hours/month September through March. 10–20 hours/month from April through August.
- Location/Schedule: Work is 80% remote and schedule is flexible outside of events and meetings, which can include evenings and weekends.
- Pay Rate: $35–45 per hour, depending on experience. Potential bonus for reaching annual revenue targets.
- Benefits: $300/month health insurance stipend, 5 days paid sick leave, flexible work schedule, remote position.
