The last avalanche forecast for this season will be published on April 18. Thank you to all who have supported this avalanche center through volunteer hours, snowpack/avalanche observations, and financial contributions.
Avalanche Course Scholarships
As part of our mission to educate the public and to create a better backcountry community, the Sierra Avalanche Center is offering scholarships for avalanche education this season. These scholarships are designed to help create a more well-educated community by providing scholarships towards American Avalanche Association approved Level 1, Level 2, Rescue, and Pro - 1 courses.
The deadline for applications for the 2020-2021 season has passed. Decisions announced first week of December.
Please check back in October 2021 for information about the 2021-2022 season.
An ideal candidate is a person who lives, recreates or performs snow oriented work in the SAC forecast area. Candidates should already be skiing or snowboarding, mountaineering or traveling on snow and not someone looking to begin a new sport. Recipients are required to provide photos and a summary to SAC after their course.
Past scholarship recipients have been skiers, snowboarders, snowshoers, scientists, recreational backcountry users, newer (but not brand-new) to the sport as well as backcountry users with decades of experience but never taken an avalanche course, professional guides, professional ski patrollers, ski/snowboard coaches, volunteer patrollers, professional skiers, youth, non-youths, men, and women.
