Whumpfing and wind slab development near Frog Lake.

     With the recent remote triggered avalanches, a buried weak layer and an abundant reports of whumpfing in the last few days my partner and I decide to keep it mellow, so we toured out to Frog Lake. While probing around we found around 110cms of total snow and 70cms of new snow from the last few days of storms. It was still continuing to snow as it snowed on us most of the day with strong S-SW winds transporting snow causing wind effected snow, soft wind slabs and building cornices on NW-N-NE-E slopes. We found a nice protected area in below tree line terrain to investigate the buried Dec.1st facets. As we were digging a pit my partner moved and a loud whumpf happened within our proximity. Upon digging, it was clear the facet layer was present and still weak and dry. I started with a column test and it released as I was performing my back cut. I moved on to the extended column test and on tap 13 there was clear propagation across the column, again failing on the Dec.1st facet layer. From there we traveled over near Frog lake to check on wind slab development and encountered thin softer slab formation and cornice build up on an NE-E facing part of the ridge line. We found some other smaller test slopes in this area to jump on the wind loaded features and got some smaller slabs to crack and release down slope. From there we traveled through more moderate terrain back to the truck to avoid exposing ourselves.
