every type of snow on Red Lake Peak

toured up the east ridge of Red Lake Peak, took our time. 10:30am - 14:30 climbing with long breaks, gave the sun a chance to soften things up. climbing conditions from 15cm ski pen to bullet hard melt-freeze crust, big soft sastrugi, big hard sastrugi, old windslabs with no whumpfing or cracking. felt pretty settled, but lots of surface hoar in the glades.

in the crater lake bowl the crowns of old avalanches are still visible but no fresh debris below. the snow felt settled but we opted for the ridge descent because it was so variable on the way up.

we rode the ridge benches down to the crater lake choke and then out the jeep road, snow was variable in every possible way.  grabby crust, soft powder, sun-baked windslab; a day to stay alert.
