Cornice Collapses and Wind Slab Avalanches on Tamarack Peak

We toured in the Tamarack Peak area today.  We received reports this morning about an avalanche in Hourglass Bowl and when we pulled up to the trailhead we could see other evidence of avalanche activity.  A cornice collapse triggered a wind slab avalanche in Hourglass Bowl that occurred sometime last night.  The avalanche ran up to 500' long and was around 75' wide.  Targeting the wind slab in Hourglass Bowl, we dug a snowpit in an adjacent area and found no indication of continuing instability.  We also saw evidence of multiple cornice collapses and wind slab avalanches that occurred off the far East Ridge of Tamarack Peak.  These avalanches ran close to full path at around 100-150' long.  We could also make out cornice collapses that occurred along the north ridge of Incline Lake Peak in the distance.  Rain crusts existed in this area up to around 8800' with a couple inches of higher density snow on top.  Above 8800', the rain crust wet away with a layer of heavier wet snow with additional higher density snow on top.  Some cracking existed around our skis below this heavier wet snow layer on top of less dense storm snow.  Travel conditions were smooth and fast today with very supportable surface snow.
