More detailed information about the snowpack: 

Sparse snow coverage existed in this area above 7500 ft. Between 7500 ft. 7000 ft. a dusting of new snow barely covered the exposed ground on some of the northerly aspects. Below 7000 ft. bare ground existed. Above 7500 ft. 6-12 inches of old snow consisting of a thin melt freeze crust on top of weak sugary snow rested on the ground. Up to an inch of new snow had accumulated on top of the melt freeze crust.

Rocks, trees, stumps, and other obstacles still protruded through the snow in this area and still provide plenty of anchoring to the snowpack (see attached photos).
