More detailed information about the snowpack: 

The El Dorado Nordic Ski Patrol went out to the northeast slope just below the hut and dug a pit to assess the snow avalanche conditions.  The snow depth was about 3 feet at the top of the manzanita bushes.  There was about 6 inches of new snow with a thin ½ inch frozen consolidated layer and more unconsolidated rounded crystals about 6 inches in depth with the last 2 feet hard consolidated snow requiring a knife to penetrate, so the conditions seemed moderate as reported by SAC that day. 

This area is a wide open slope with thick trees and brush below.
