Compression test resulting in breaks and progressive compression was showing no signs of planar failures on either the Jan 5 or 9 surface hoar layers. On the surface of wind protected areas there was preserved stellers and surface hoar growing around 8800'. Up higher on the ridge line there was signs of wind effected snow and light transporting of snow to the west from today's east wind.  I encountered a very thin sun crust forming about 1cm below the surface on South aspects. No ski cut results or other signs of instability obsevered.
