Snowpit Observations
More detailed information about the snowpack: 

Two quick pits within 30 meters of each other and about 100 meters from the ridge demonstrated very different depths to the snowpack. Both sites were behind trees, out of the wind. The first site only had about 30cm of snow so we moved to a second site. The snow was almost a meter deep there. The persistent weak layer that has been mentioned was there, about 6cm above the ground, but was not very reactive and a shovel compression test failed to get any reaction.
