These observations document past conditions at a small and variable scale. They are not to be confused with an avalanche forecast. They come from a variety of sources. We can only vouch for the quality of those produced by the SAC forecasters and professional observers.

Snowpack Observation
Talking Mt.

Echo Summit Area
Lovely day in the on the ridge. Warm in the sun, but well below freezing in the shade. The new snow was mostly uncohesive, but did show a little slab characteristics. Cornice break in response to a wicked splitboard kick. This is what our PSTs looked like after we completed the tests, almost the same as when we started. Professional Observer

Snowpack Observation
Tamarack Peak

Mount Rose Area
Small inconsequential cracking on a wind-loaded test slope. The shiny track in front of my ski is not the track of a giant snow snail, but rather surface hoar that collapsed as a small cornice piece slide down the slope. 4 to 8 mm surface hoar was present on most open slopes at all elevations. Settlement crack around the base of a tree. Forecaster

Waterhouse Peak

Jumping on several summit ridge wind loaded test slopes produced little to no failure of wind slabs. Wind slab - very minor crack and the only cracking we could trigger on summit ridge test slopes. 2 to 5 mm surface hoar in upper elevation open areas, ~9,400', N aspect. 10 mm surface hoar along the summit ridge at ~9,480', N aspect.
